What a GST invoice must contain

Under the CGST Rules a tax invoice needs the supplier's name, address and GSTIN; a unique serial number and date; the recipient's name, address and GSTIN if registered; the HSN or SAC code, description, quantity, rate and taxable value of each item; the GST rate and amount split into CGST and SGST for supply within a state or IGST for interstate supply; the total; and the supplier's signature. This generator lays all of those out in a standard format.

Intra-state vs interstate

If your customer is in the same state, GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. If they are in another state, the whole amount is charged as IGST. Select the right option; it changes the tax lines on the PDF. HSN codes are mandatory on invoices for turnover above ₹5 crore (6 digits) and ₹1.5 crore (4 digits).

After downloading

Sign the PDF, send it to the customer and keep a copy; invoices must be retained for 72 months. Use consecutive invoice numbers within a financial year. For e-invoicing (mandatory above ₹5 crore turnover) you still need to upload to the IRP; this PDF is for your records and for businesses below the threshold.
